Acupuncture for Acne
Acupuncture is also very effective in addressing acne.
People with acne often respond very well to treatment with acupuncture. This is especially true when they make appropriate nutritional and lifestyle changes in conjunction with their acupuncture treatments.
Acne is usually seen as a sign of what acupuncturists call “damp heat” which can result from a combination of eating too much oily food and spicy food along with too many dairy products.
Acupuncture helps re-establish the correct flow of energy along the body's meridian channels: essentially, it helps get your insides sorted out so that your outside can be healed in the long term.
During acne acupuncture, fine stainless steel needles are used - these are carefully inserted into your skin at the vital acupuncture points. In acne acupuncture, the points work together to restore the balance in your energy pattern.
On average, between three and six acne acupuncture treatments will be necessary before a noticeable acne improvement takes place, but if the thought of needles is off-putting, rest assured that you're not about to undertake a form of torture more suited to a horror movie - amazingly, acupuncture doesn't really hurt at all.
When acne acupuncture is performed, some chemical substances in the spinal chord and brain are released into the body - and among these substances is the tongue-twisting adrenocorticotrophic hormone - one of the components which take part in the formation of a steroid. From orthodox medicine, it is know that steroids can have a beneficial effect on many skin diseases, so when this natural hormone is released and activated through acupuncture, the body is stimulated to heal itself from the inside.
A study was done on 120 acne patients with average age 23 years, with post acne facial scars, with facial acne. Acupuncture was done on body, acne area and ears, with silver, gold and small facial/ ear needles, under strict aseptic condition, as 10 day's daily, then 1-week gap and 10 more as bi/tri-weekly depending upon response, treatment lasting 15 to 20 min.with electric stimulation of needles in all.
Herbal face peeling was done at beginning & fortnightly during therapy. Additional acupuncture was done in some scars. 80% saw an improvement in their acne in 1st week and 95% in two weeks. 90% were stress free and felt confident. 90% were acne free & 80% scar free at treatment end. Most were followed up to 3 years, 10% had mild recurrence. Overall 90% success with no infection compares well with other similar study reports. Overall improved complexion was a bonus to all.
Acne and acne scars are very common worldwide and need more attention for better, safer treatments and cures, both for medical and esthetic purposes. Acupuncture is a treatment of choice in acne and scars and it eliminates the need of surgery in most. Better results are usually seen when coupled with nutritional and lifestyle changes. Be sure to talk with your medical provider about treatments you are interested in trying.
