Back Acne
Acne affects the areas of the skin that contain sebaceous glands, including the face, upper chest, and back. Back acne appears in the same forms as face acne, such as blackheads, pimples, pustules, or even cysts.
Back acne can affect people from age 10 to age 40 and even after that. Back acne happens when sebaceous glands start functioning more aggressively around puberty. The male hormone group androgens get active which in turn stimulates sebaceous glands into producing extra amount of sebum.
Back acne may be found on the back and even on the buttocks of some people. Back acne can be a severe form when the lesions are large and painful. As with much acne, the exact cause of back acne is not exactly known.
Back acne comes from wearing tight-fitting clothes, which trap perspiration against your skin. You can avoid back acne by showering immediately after workouts, exfoliating any oily build-up with a loofah on a regular basis and treating any breakouts with a benzoyl peroxide treatment.
Back acne is prevalent, and often harder to treat than facial acne. The back is made of tough skin with thousands of sebaceous glands that produce a lot of oil. As the skin on the back is thicker than anywhere else on the body, back acne is well treated by 10 percent benzoyl peroxide which is not suitable for the thinner skin and exposed body part suffering from acne. Benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric. Keep this in mind if using it on the back. You will need to wear white.
In back acne, if the inflammation is right near the surface than the patient gets a pustule. If infection is deeper, it forms papule. Deeper still acne causes cysts which are the worst form of acne and carry the possibility of permanent scarring. In back acne, if the extra sebum breaks through the skin it causes a whitehead, and if the head of the plug becomes dark due to the skin pigment melanin, it is called a blackhead.
Beauty expert Rona Berg suggests combating back acne by trying a professional 'back facial.' You can follow up the treatment at home by washing your back with salicylic acid soap such as SalAc or Sastid. These exfoliate the skin as does beta-hydroxy bodies wash.
There are some differences between back acne and other forms of acne. Other acne may be caused by heredity and genetic disposition but in the back acne, except for the severe cases, people don't have the problem just as their parents did. In anyway, some degree of back acne afflicts people all over the world so it can be expected that more than one person of any family might have shown signs of back acne.
Most probably, the simpler forms of back acne might disappear with daily hygienic routine but as cystic back acne goes deep into the skin and causes permanent scarring, it should be given more medical attention than simple pustules or blackheads on the back.
One more thing to mention when talking about back acne is back packs. Heavy back packs rub on the upper shoulders/back and can cause irritation. As annoying as it sounds, you might want to try hand held bag for the first few weeks of back acne regimen.
