New treatments for acne
One of the new treatments for acne is a proprietary ClearLight system (made by a company called Lumenis). This is a lamp that emits a beam of blue light at 410 to 420 nanometers, a wavelength that activates certain pigments in P. acnes bacteria. These pigments, called porphyrins, absorb the light, producing a chemical reaction that kills the bacteria. Unlike damaging ultraviolet light, the blue light does not burn the skin or increase the risk of skin cancer.
"This is a light similar to what we use to treat jaundice in newborns," explains Dr. Alan Shalita, who was one of the chief investigators in the clinical trials leading to FDA approval of the device. "It's a very high intensity light that doesn't have any side effects that we can see. And it does appear to destroy the bacteria in the skin."
ClearLight is a new treatment for acne and a possible alternative to antibiotics. It does not work on severe cystic eruptions, and it doesn't seem to have an effect on very mild acne.
A typical course of ClearLight new treatment for acne consists of a month of fifteen-minute sessions, twice a week. According to the results of the initial trials for this new treatment for acne, patients whose acne responded to the light saw anywhere from a 50 to 70 percent reduction in the number of acne lesions after a month. Their acne continued to improve for another month afterward, with some experiencing even more clearing over the following three months.
"I don't think this is a cure for acne," comments Shalita. "But it is a noninvasive, nonchemical treatment, so that maybe, if you used it with Retin-A, you wouldn't have to use antibiotics."
Another new clinically proven, FDA cleared hand held device for acne treatment and rapid clearance of individual acne blemishes is ZENO.
Zeno is the most scientifically advanced and effective new treatment for acne available without a prescription. ZENO is used by people with mild to moderate acne.
Zeno delivers a precisely controlled amount of heat to the acne area, resulting in the self destruction of abnormal bacteria and a return of the skin in the area to a healthy and normal appearance.
Safe, effective and painless, ZENO can clear an acne pimple in just hours. As many as two to three 2-minute treatments may be required during a 24 hour period.
Other than some temporary, mild redness of the skin right after the new treatment for acne, adverse reactions are quite rare.
For the fastest results, it is advised to use this amazing new treatment for acne at the very first sign that a pimple is developing.
